An excellent historical novel of the British seizure & colonization of Hong Kong in the early 19th century told through the struggles of 2 rival trading companies and the families aligned with them. An insightful look at both the Chinese & British cultures of the time and how they inform these cultures today.

I read this book on my first trip to Hong Kong. If you're interested in Hong Kong, or going there, you must read this!

Perhaps the best of the series of books by James Clavell regarding the history of Asia. Very exciting and set in modern times as opposed to Noble House or Shogun.

I really like this book. It is the first of a series of two, the second is Noble House.

Tai-Pan is the story of the founding of Hong Kong, as told through a fictional trading house.

The second book (which I am reading right now) covers Hong Kong in the mid-sixties.

Very good historical fiction.
