I have unpostable ex-library hardcovers of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (810 wishers), Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson (161 wishers), and Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr (79 wishers).
They are all completely readable, and the only issues are varying degrees of water damage and perhaps some dirt/soot staining. None of them have any mold or anything like that, so are good as reading copies. They were pulled from our house after it burned down, and came out surprisingly well, but our library wouldn't take back damaged books. The condition details:
The Hunger Games has some minor dirt or soot staining to the page edges, and possibly to the dust jacket (it's plastic coated, and I wiped it down, so there's nothing visible I can see). Water got to the top and bottom of the rear of the book. On the bottom of the back pages (affecting maybe ten text pages) there's some minor waviness, and a few pages have color leaked through from when the water washed some dye out of the end paper. None of the damage to the bottom reaches or affects the text in any way. On the top of the rear pages is the worst of the damage. There is very slight water damage waviness to much of the top of the book (like you'd get from humidity), and there is a point starting at page 250 where you can see a visible edge or discoloration to the water damage, which gets worse the farther back you go. While it does stretch into the text, it does not obscure it or affect readability at all. There is also more color staining from the end paper, which again doesn't reach the text at all.
Wintergirls has far less damage. There may be some minor dirt staining to the page edges, like you find on library books. I think the dust jacket got some water damage on the bottom front, but with the plastic library cover, it's hard to tell. It's a little bit ripply in one spot, but is otherwise fine. As far as the book itself goes, the bottom front of the book is water damaged. The inner part of the pages are wavy there, but the only discoloration is where some dye once again got washed through to a small section of pages. Again, it at no point reaches the actual text of the book, and is confined in this case to a small segment of the bottom page margin.
Wicked Lovely is almost perfectly fine, and is probably postable, but I just don't want to take the risk of putting it into FIFO. I'd rather the person knows exactly what they're getting. Once again, I suspect some small amount of water may have gotten to the dust jacket, since it's a little ripply but visibly fine. Of course, that may once again just be how it fits the book with the plastic over it. There is possibly some humidity type water damage rippling to the page edges. Nothing extensive, or even really noticeable. I think the paper just absorbed a very small amount of water from the air, since it's not even stiff or anything. Also, on the first Prologue page, there are a couple of orange spots, like someone who had the book before touched a orange marker to the page. It isn't on the text, but it is a text page.
I'd like to get a credit for each of these, to help me replace some of my books (all of which were destroyed, since they were kept in a different area). But, in any case, these really do have to go, either through here or into the trash, so make me a fair offer. I'd also be more than happy to provide pictures of any of the books, if you want to see what I've described better.
