This book, Taming the Wind, is the third in a trilogy by Tracie Peterson called Land of the Lone Star. Reading the second book in the series, Touching the Sky, is highly recommended as the main characters in this book also appear in that book and this is merely a continuation of their story.

Peterson makes getting to know her characters easy; they are realistic and their relationships follow a natural progression. The setting of the book is post-Civil War Texas; the Rebels have been defeated soundly, and they are now paying dearly for their part in the war. Indians are still a threat to those settled West of the Mississippi River. The plot involves a cattle drive from Texas to Kansas through Indian territory; Tyler Atherton, the hero, needs the money from the sale to buy back his ranch. Carissa Lowe, the heroine, is a widowed mother living on a ranch with her sister far from their previously opulent home in Corpus Christi, Texas. Her little daughter, Gloria, loves Tyler but Carissa is hesitant to offer him anything more than friendship. Her distrust of Tyler stems from an abusive relationship she was in that is well chronicled in the second book in the series.

Readers will enjoy seeing Carissas character development from a spoiled rich girl to a strong woman capable of shooting a gun, riding a horse, and running a ranch. Laura, Carissas sister is pregnant, and her husband is accompanying Tyler on the cattle drive. The book delves into deep territory in places, such as when Tyler confronts the Indian warrior who killed his family (Is revenge always a good idea? Is it possible to forgive such a person?) or when he frets that without his ranch, he wont be able to provide for a family. The book is a nice blend of romance and action, without being overly preachy or saccharine.

"Taming the Wind" by Tracie Peterson in the concluding book in the "Land of the Lone Star" trilogy. This book follows the story of Carissa Lowe, a young widow with a small daughter named Gloria. After her terrible, abusive first marriage, she is afraid to trust her heart with anyone. Relying heavily on her sister, Carissa seeks to be as independent as possible. Tyler Atherton was the man who saved Carissa's life when her husband attempted to end her life. A former Confederate soldier, he's lost his family's ranch due to his loyalties in the war. He attempts to get back his ranch with the help of his friend, Will Barnett.

The story was captivating and the characters were well developed. I loved how this story drew in characters from the other two books in the trilogy and neatly wrapped up the series. There was a bit of predictability in the story, but there was enough action to help offset that aspect.

Overall, the story was well done and I felt it was a great conclusion to this series. As a long-time fan of Peterson's work, I felt that a couple of her most recent series weren't quite up to par, but I really enjoyed this series and felt it was a bit more up to her usual standard.

(Ive received this complimentary book from Bethany House Publishers through the Book Blogger program in exchange for a review. A positive review was not required and the views expressed in my review are strictly my own.)

Tracie Peterson has written a wonderful book to conclude the Land of the Lone Star series. This is Carissa's story. She survived a devestating marriage and is trying to start a new life in the hills of Texas, which are filled with adventure and danger. Highly recommended!
