Know how to use basals (controlled vocabulary, leveled instructional readers) and how to make the transition to books as children develop skills and confidence. This is a comprehensive treatment of reading instruction that doesn't leave you hanging when the child has developed the ability to decode words. There's plenty here on teaching comprehension and also a fair amount on teaching writing integrated with reading instruction. The prose is clear.
