This book just didn't do it for me. It reads like an old man telling his life story, with just patches of interesting points. It was difficult to care what happened to Jack. His wife, Mai, was tragic, but neither character came alive. I kept looking at the back of the book to see what type of awards that the author had won. Back of the book states that Barry "brilliantly re-imagines characters from Barry's own family". If this is brilliant, than I have a few elderly people to introduce you to; or try Marilyn's Wing's novel "Blue Skies, Green Hell", which is just a tip of her stories. Received ARC (avail in book bazaar) in goodreads contest, with expectation of a fair/honest review.
