Headstrong, impassioned and independent, Dani Pembroke is nobody's fool. Left virtually parentless at age nine when her mother inexplicably vanished and her father abdicated responsibility for her upbringing to her grandmother, Dani is at 34 a successful entrepreneur. The granddaughter of two wealthy scions from Saratoga, N.Y., a town known for its extravagance and flamboyance, Dani has tried to forge her own identity amid the allure of old money and the unpleasantness of old feuds. Then Zeke Cutler, aloof, handsome and self-employed as a sort of private detective, arrives in Saratoga at the height of its racing season to resolve the same mystery Dani is pursuing: the circumstances surrounding her mother's disappearance. She joins forces with him although she doesn't completely trust him. When the consequences of past events threaten her business--a mineral water bottling plant and spa--Zeke offers the combination of bravado and stability that Dani needs to make peace with her past. Neggers's engaging romantic mystery neatly blends fiction with authentic detail.

Dani Pembroke had lost her mother long ago - but the mysterious circumstances of her disappearance still kept the people of Saratoga whispering. Now, successful and fiercely independent, Danit wanted to forget the past and concentrate on running her business. But then Zeke Cutler arrived...
He was handsome, cooly confident - and determined to uncover the real story behind Lilly Chandler Pembroke's vanishing. Dani could never have dreamed of the secrets he would uncover, the truths he would reveal.
And she would never have dared to dream of the long-suppressed passion he would unleash in her heart.....

This book was very hard to get through. The characters and situations were complicated and confusing, the plot lines were boring and the romance was totally unconvincing.

First I've read of hers. I thought she should have been busier in meetings and running the business........she flew alot of kites. I guess it's two lost souls who find each other in spite of themselves.

This was decent, but I found the main two characters to be kind of unlikable- she seemed to be always angry and irritated at everything, he really had no personality- the really interesting characters were the more minor ones. It wasn't a bad novel, but I was impatient to get to the ending and find out the answer to the big mystery. There was also a fairly big plot hole- one of the characters does a number of extreme things but really seems to have no motivation to do what he does at all. Or maybe I just missed something. Not my favorite novel by her.

I usually enjoy Carla Neggers, but this book had way too many characters who each had complicated back stories. Hard to follow.
