(FROM DUST JACKET) Sir Terence Conran is a designer who revolutionized retailing by taking the principles of good design, high quality, and easy shopping into main streets around the world. He was born in London in 1931 and educated at Bryanston School, Dorset, and the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. He worked as a designer and furniture maker, and started a design consultancy in 1956. The first Habitat store opened in London in 1964. It was an instant success and is today a major chain incorporating the Conran's Habitat stores in the United States, and stores in the United Kingdom, France, Belguim, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Iceland, Martinique, Singapore, and Japan. In 1987, with Paul Hamlyn and Simon Hopkinson, he opened Bibendum, a highly acclaimed French restaurant, in the Michelin Building, London. More recently, he has been involved in the creation of The Design Museum in London's Docklands. The author of many bestselling books, his successes include The House Book, The Kitchen Book, The Bed and Bath Book, and Terence Conran's New House Book.
