I was expecting something else from this book. I was thinking this was a book about the history of quilt patterns. What I got was still a joy. The book is a series of letters to a friend explaining about her life in the Kansas Territory before the civil war, while the country was at "war", about free states vs proslavery states. Uprising between Missouri, and the whole John Brown uprising are the main focus. It reads as easy as a fiction story, but it is a retelling of true events. The author is a historical writer, who is a distnat decendent of main character. Quilts are mentioned many times, but that is not the main focus of the book. I loved the meaning behind the title, the thimble of soil. It was touching.
