What conditions would you have with a DVD?  It's not likely to pick up a smoke smell. There's no dust-jacket to worry about or paperback vs hardback.  I suppose there's wide-screen v full or something. But I don't belong to that club-I'm assuming that info is in the dvd description. But anyway-there just aren't as many variables w/DVD's as there are with books.

A few members have actually reported strong smoke smells.  And crusted-on food, though that shouldn't require a condition.

The rules currently require original case art and disk, in a DVD case, but do not require the paper program/insert booklet (if there was one).  I could see someone requesting those.

From what I have read issues are--

ex-rentals (worn out, covered with stamps, etc)

smoke smell

pirated copies

I've been kvetching about non-RCs over on SaDVD, as my RC isn't media-related - I just really need items wrapped in plastic due to weather.  It sucks that I can't request that on SaDVD.

And smoke can definitely permeate the outer paper packaging of DVDs.

I'm not a member of swap a DVD but it would seem to me that pirated copies would be against basic swapping conditions, kind of like books without covers or ARCs aren't allowed here.

With SwapADVD, pirated copies are against the rules.  If you get one, report it so that appropriate action can be taken.  If someone has sent you a Malaysian rip off or a home copied DVD, then those are illegal copies and against club rules.

I could see being upset about the crusted on food.  How long would it take to wipe it off with a damp cloth before mailing it?  I'd report that, too.

I'm allergic to smoke, too, but I am not worried about it.  I am not going to be sniffing that DVD every time I receive one.  If the DVD is playable, and has the artwork & a case, then it's ok by SADVD, and it's ok by me.

Everyone who is on the DVD site just needs to log in and send me my wish list.  I can buy more credits if necessary.

how could a dvd or cd retain smoke smell?  I didn't think that they could, but maybe the case could?

CDs & DVDs are made of plastic, which can absorb smells, including smoke, not to mention the case, paper liner, etc.

I was just getting around to cataloging my cds and dvds, with the idea of finally getting on SwapCD, and SwapDVD, I'm disappointed that the latter doesn't allow RCs...which I find really useful on PBSwap.

I do think that people get ticked off about RCs simply because they can.....they can be snotty or worse in response because you don't see their name or anything, and these are no longer tracked in your transaction archive.

Scratched DVDs would be a concern.

For most people smoke would not be an issue with a DVD as it is with a book, because it's not in your face... but someone with a very strong allergy like my mother could, and someone reported over there receiving a DVD that *REEKED* of smoke (must have been a house full of chain smokers or something!).  :(  So I can see needing that.

I'd like to request no former rentals over there--for some movies I don't care, but PBS lets you take them off or add them on for 48-hour requests, and it sure would be nice to do that on Swap-a-DVD also.  That way I can add them on on requests for those films that we just can't afford to buy right now but I want to keep forever and don't want excessively worn and covered in sticker goo etc., kwim?

The lack of requester conditions is also keeping the APO people away from that site--over here there are a couple dozen (I think), but there only three or four.  The APO requestor conditions are automatically generated by PBS here, and it explains how the military addresses work, how you can use DC to get automatic credit or be prepared to wait a little longer for shipping time, etc.  On Swap-a-DVD with no RC I can't explain anything and I can never request a boxed set because without a customs form it will never reach me.

As for pirated and dirt-covered dvds, yes of course they are against site rules, but there are those who would like to repeat/remind about the site conditions just as there are people who do that here on PBS...
