A Soviet SS-17 missile's nuclear warhead detonates over Birmingham, England. An estimated 300,000 people are killed and 250,000 seriously injured. In immediate retaliation two submarine-launched ballistic missiles, one American and one British, destroy Minsk, in the Soviet Union. The Third World War has begun.
