How does the thumbs down effect the reviews if at all?  Just wondering.

If enough members click thumbs-down on a review, it will be hidden from view and only clicking See All Reviews will reveal it.

Above straight from help documents.

So, nothing really.  It's still there, and you can still see it if you click "See All Reviews".

It works better if there are other reviews that can be given a thumbs up.  This helps push the thumbsdown reviews down and the bring the good useful reviews up to the top.  Yes you could still find the useless reviews if you looked but I bet most people don't bother to go past the first page if there are good helpful reviews on top and my good I mean more than just "this book sucks", "didn't read", "my cover is different" and just plain "I liked it".  I didn't mean only reviews that liked the book.

There used to be a thread going where people could put a link to books with "bad" reviews for people to go to and rate the reviews.  I guess no one kept up with it and it got pushed back.

When I read member reviews that simply copy and paste the flap I give them a  no , how lazy can someone be? How about an original thought or two on the book.

Rob, these may be remnants from when the system did not allow for data edits. If a book didn't have a description on it, the only way to put one was to do it in a review. If you see one on a book that still doesn't have a description on it, but there is one in the review, please do a data edit and copy the information into the description field before giving it a thumbs down. Then the information will be available in the correct place :)

Early one that was the sort of "review" I would occasionally post if there was no synopsis attached to the book.  I don't like leaving reviews for every book I've read but I do like knowing what the story line is about when I'm looking for a book so I thought there may be others like me that would like to find the plot line posted w/ the book.   Later when the data edit option became available I used that instead.

I will click on a thumb's down if the information is vague or useless as mentioned above by Mary.  I do give thumbs up for helpful reviews also if there is one.

i give a thumbs down to the reviews that say "I haven't read this book" or the ones that just say "good".

I give a thumbs down to reviews that seem to review the transaction - recently I found one that said "good condition - fast shipping" as if it were an ebay review so I gave that a thumbs down.

Yes, there was a campaign going for awhile to try to get "inappropriate" reviews removed or at least hidden unless "read all" was clicked. These were reviews that gave descriptions of a particular copy of a book ("ex-library with stickers, otherwise good condition" or "older book, well-worn") or that gave a review of the transaction. People sometimes don't understand that this isn't like Amazon marketplace and putting anything about an individual copy of a book or the transaction with a particular sender is virtually worthless.

I rarely read reviews anyway, but when I do, I do give thumbs down for those mentioned above, those who simply list the blurb from the back of the book, or that say "great book" or "I didn't like this one very well" with no explanation at all as to why they did or didn't like it.
