This is my favorite Matthew Scudder novel. It's the most suspenseful and scary. Scudder has his own set of rules and sense of justice, and he's not above breaking rules to make justice happen. In this case he lies on the stand to put away a criminal that he knows is guilty of murder. Years later, the guy makes parole and comes looking for Scudder. He plays a cat and mouse game, attacking people all around him, before he contacts Scudder. He tortures Scudder just to give him a taste of what's coming. The setting of NYC is like another character in the novel, Scudder fights his own internal battle with the bottle, and he's worried about protecting the woman he loves. It's a great read, tightly written and with Scudder's dry humor. My other favs of Block's are A Walk Among the Tombstones and A Dance at the Slaughterhouse. If you like Robert B Parker, you'll like the Matthew Scudder novels.
