This story is about a man who thinks of himself as a modest person who would rather be known as polite than famous. His values are far higher than his aspirations. He doesn't want to be Prime Minister or even a Cabinet Minister, he just wants to live his life right.

The story has chapters dealing with his current life near the end of his career, with alternating chapters covering his childhood and earlier life. All masterfully woven together by James Hilton.

Sometimes I had to ask myself, "Where is this story heading?" Yet I found myself continually picking it up again to read. No blood, no sex, no real action, just the wonderful story of a man's life and his personal triumphs and sorrows. In the end, you realize that he more than achieved what he set out to do.

Wonderful character development and a great alternative to those novels that try to keep you on the edge of your seat without leaving you anything to ponder when you finally close the book.
