This is the first in the Lafayette O'Leary series. Lafayette, an ingenious 23 yo draftsman, lives in a boardinghouse and leads a dull, boring life. Then one day he discovers a way to travel to the alternate world of Artesia, a medieval kingdom where he can make just about anything happen at will.
This is an enjoyable, quick read, as is typical of Keith Laumer's books. Lots of action and laughs. I read this series decades ago as a teenager and have been looking for it ever since. Highly recommended.
I couldn't get into rooting for the main character.
Layafette O'Leary is a draftsman who is down on his luck and almost out of a job. Then an experiment with self-hypnosis lands him in the magical world of Artesia. He gets out of jams by wishing himself back and forth from Artesia to Earth, but then that gets harder to do. So, he faces the fact that he is in Artesia to stay and sets off to win the hand of the princess by slaying an evil ogre who lives in a Las Vegas-type casino. Everything seems to be going according to plan, but to whose plan? And even though the princess is drop-dead gorgeous, is she really Miss Right? This is the first book in a short fantasy series by a well-known sci-fi author.
