When he did make his only bid for the Oval Office, in 1980, it was in a surprising attempt to unseat an incumbent Democrat, Jimmy Carter. Though Kennedy?s 1980 campaign did not succeed, it ended in a speech to the Democratic National Convention that sealed his status as liberalism?s greatest champion. The failure of that campaign also freed Kennedy to focus for the rest of his life on the work of the Senate. It was there that he gave enduring substance to the Kennedy family legacy, through legislation that shaped this nation in many areas--education, the economy, civil rights, law enforcement and foreign policy--and especially through his decades-long struggle to extend affordable health care to all Americans.
