Are you sure you're ordering directly  from these members' shelves, Dana?  If you're clicking on the links in the book titles, you're going into the FIFO database, and you are no longer ordering directly from someone's shelf.  You should be placing your order from the "order this book" tab next to the title while you're browsing the bookshelf.  Then you should double check that by clicking on the PM tab in your order confirmation, and making sure the user names match.  Hope that helps:)

I've ordered quite a few deals lately and here's what I do - I put the books I'm getting as freebies on my reminder list and tag them so that I know what I'm supposed to be getting and from whom.  When books come, I check them against that list and remove the ones that arrive, also making sure that I'm getting the freebies that were offered to me.

It sounds like you are ordering through FIFO and not from the shelf of the member doing the deals. This would mean that the person you intended to order from and get the freebies from, never got your order and can't send you anything because they don't have your address.

Dana,

I have done A LOT of deals with people and have never had a problem before. Until the other day, I got a message from a lady I was planning to do a deal with, the book was already in the system waiting for the member, the lady e-mailed me and told me that she had not gotten a request for the book I told her I had ordered off of her. I thought this was weird because I knew that I had placed my order with her and then Pm'd her my free choices. When I went in and checked somehow I had gotten out of her bookshelf and had ordered the book off of someone else. Thankfully the person I had ordered it off of hadn't accepted it yet and I had time to Cancel the order and go back and order it off the lady I was going the deal with. I am now always checking ot make sure that I am in the right bookshelf. I have no clue how I got outside of this person's Bookshelf but I did. Maybe you should just check. Sorry that you are having a bad time with this! I have offered a few deals and have gotten deals off a number of people and have yet to have any problems!....

Would also like to add, I keep a little palm sized notebook that I got from my local dollar store for $1.00. I put the person's real name and their PBS nickname along with the book that I ordered from their shelf first, then underneath I put all of my Freebies that I got off the person. This way, I can keep track to make sure that the right books are coming to me and not just a random book that I did not want. When the books comes I take a black marker and put a line threw it. Enough to where I can still see the books incase i need to contact the person again for any reason, but then I know that I did recieve the deal and can go down the list of my deals.. Hope this helped!

I have had it happen to me. My suggestion is to get the promise written in a P.M. and then continue to use that same PM when you ask where your book are. All the history shows for that P.M. at the same time.

It definitely sounds like you are leaving that person's shelf and ordering through the FIFO system.  Always make sure you return to the person's shelf you were browsing before placing your order, and then PM the person to let them know you have placed the order.  Then double check your account page to make sure the person you sent the pm to and the person your ordered from are the same.

Yup the few times I have ordered deals, I rechecked the order repeatedly to make sure it comes from the right person.

I'm basically repeating what others have said before me....and apologies in advance, because they may be more eloquent than I ...

The only way to be sure you are ordering from a member's shelf is to click "Order" directly from their shelf.  If you click on the book description first - and then click "order" - you will be ordering from the FIFO queue.

Whenever I have been involved in a deal, I keep the info handy with the sender's nickname and what freebies I ordered.  I have never had a problem.

You might want to check your transaction archive, and compare it with your PM's, and see if it's indeed the same person.

Whether your giving a deal or getting a deal.. its good to send a PM with the details to the person.. that way you have a record of who you are doing the deal with and what books are involved.   If you are taking someone up on an offer, make sure you get a response to your detailed PM with an affirmative answer.

Then... once the order has been accpepted... click the PM button on the order and make sure the person is the one offering the order and that it didn't go to someone elses shelf.

Here's a quick question for all of you regarding ordering directly off of someone's shelf (I hadn't realized you could do this except when an order was already placed and you just request an additional book!).  Do you go directly to that member's bookshelf, press order, and then (even if there are 10 copies in the system), the book comes from that person's bookshelf, skipping the FIFO?

Stephanie, that's exactly right.

It's so easy to mis-order when doing this.  If you click to look at the book's description and use that order button, it'll go the FIFO route.  You must go back to their shelf and use that order button.  Do it once or twice and you learn the hard way !!  (experience talking here !!  lol  !!!)

Can the person you order a book from directly tell that it is a "direct order" or does the request come across just like any other request?  I'm asking for a very specific reason!  <grin>  When we were down visiting my in-laws last week, my five year old kept requesting the same book to be read over and over.  I thought it was cute enough, but my husband and my father-in-law kept dispariging the book (it IS pretty girly).  Anyway, I happened to note that a couple of days after we left, the book ended up on my mother-in-law's bookshelf.  I know there are two of these books posted and I've been keeping watch to see when there's only one posted and if it was still on my MIL's shelf, I was going to order it from her C/O her "Grandaughter who loved this book" as a joke.  If I can order it without it being obvious right away that it's coming from me or a special order that would make her suspicious, I can play my practical joke on her right away!

Stephanie it comes in as a regular order and the person won't know unitl it's accepted and the hit the PM button or access your address. There's no way to personalize a request.

When I'm ordering from a book deal, I always immediately check who the book is coming from to make sure it's from the one offering the deal. You can do that by doing the order more from member. If it doesn't match, I cancel the request. Then I go back to the right person's shelf and make sure the book didn't get requested by someone else, thereby bumping me to FIFO or that I didn't do something wrong and then reorder the book.

LOL, I think we've all ordered thru the FIFO system when we meant to order directly from someone.  I know I've done it too.

Hi

thanks for all the help. i guess i need to keep better records.

i could have gotten confused as you see a post go to the shelf then pm the person then have to post the freebies for others to see and order the book

it just annoys me because some of t hese books i only ordered as part of the feebie deal

and i manage to get the ones sent to me that are not my top pick

life and learn

Definitely put in the request for the book you want the absolute most.  I've never had anyone not send the freebies they've promised.  Definitely keep track of the freebies requested too and let the other member know if they've forgotten to send them.

Here's what I do anytime I order a deal, to make sure that I have ordered from the person it was supposed to come from.

After I place the order, the page then asks if I want to go to my account or back to the list. I click the button to take me to my account and immediately click the tab for BOOKS I'VE REQUESTED

There, I click the PM button for on the book I just ordered. I can then see for certain that I have ordered from the right person. I send my PM to them at that time telling them I've taken them up on their special and let them know what book I ordered, and what my free books I want are.

This serves two purposes. It verifies that I have ordered from the right person. And it processes the order without the one-hour 'buyers remorse' waiting period.

This happened to me once. A member posted (on either the ROAK or Book Bazaar) that she was giving away several damaged books to anyone who asked, for free. I PMed her and asked two of them and she said OK. One was on my wishlist, so I took it off. She never sent them. A month later I asked her about it, and she said she didn't know what I was talking about, so I showed her a link to the post where she offered the free books. She said she would send them the next day, and never did.

So I just put them back on my WL and got them the normal way. Be careful, you can't always get something for nothing.
