After a harrowing journey back from pilgrimage, Simon gives up sailing home for the safety of solid ground. While traveling through a small Cornish village, Baldwin and Simon are drawn into what seems like the sad murder suicide of a local widow and her two young sons. When the suicide is shown to be a murder Baldwin and Simon become part of the investigation. Through their investigation, Jecks once more examines the prejudices and supersitions that motivate social interactions and how ones life experiences impact on character development. How fragile are family bonds and what does it take to cross social boundaries to act murderously?
