Politics, treachery - Frazer must have had a fun time researching this and weaving her story into the historical events. Just about everything in this story was true, except of course for our heroine's and hero's involvement. Alice, widow of Lord Suffolk, wants Frevisse to companion her in a time when she is unsure whether or not she can hold on to the dukedom for her son. Suffolk and Somerset are suspected of collaborating in the treachery of the loss of France, and the peasant uprisings are leading to murder left and right of the hated members of the aristocracy. Joliffe, spy for the Duke of York, teams up with Lady Alice's man to recover a letter that Suffolk wrote before his death which they suspect names the conspirators in the plot to lose France, and Frevisse is unwillingly drawn into the intrigue by her cousin's request. Once again Frazer writes a fascinating story, or rather cleverly inserts her characters into historical events and brings them alive for her readers.
