This is a magnificent tale. You might even call it an epic. I remember---when I was in high school---watching the one-season TV show based on the book. How I enjoyed it, and was sorry when it was canceled.

Jaimie McPheeters reminds me of Huckleberry Finn, especially with his comments about book learning, religion, or almost everything else. In the book his adventures aren't always pleasant and there are many deaths of characters as well as some really nasty characters who, fortunately, eventually met their deserved end. A few of the lesser nasty characters do get away with their swindles and a tragedy does occur in the last chapter, which is off-set by a wonderful event in Jaimie's life. Why didn't I see that coming?

I always wanted to read the book, but life has a way of putting things off. So you can imagine how pleased I was, almost 60 years later, to discover a copy in a box of books donated to a thrift store I volunteer at. This one is a keeper.
