This is an excellent fiction book based on the real beliefs of the Native American (Indian) people of the Pacific Northwest. From dust jacket: "Jordan Tidewater, the first female sheriff of the Salish Reservation in the Olympic Peninsula, is handed the most terrifying murder case of her career. First a sacred old cedar is mysteriously cut down, then brutal murders wrack the placid Salish Indian community. Some victims are sadistically slaughtered, others buried alive. The tribal elders insist that a shaman's vengeful spirit has been released, and now Jordan must struggle against a powerful force that will put the lives of even those closest to her at stake. She must delve into her people's ancient lore and rituals to fight this savage killer-a beautiful woman empowered by the spirit of a long-dead shaman. Set in the cathedral-like heart of the Olympic rain forest, The Tree People is a compelling mystery and a sensitive tribute to an age-old culture."
