"Mrs. Varden, in Barnaby Rudge (1841) is a telling picture of the apparently ideal wife who actually manages to torment her entire household, her good-natured and inoffensive husband in particular, by her whining and perversity. In all superficial aspects she is a model wife a good-looking woman, a devout Protestant, a fanatical housekeeper whose cleaning proceeds from Monday morning through Saturday afternoon."
