I haven't been a PBS member for long, but I've gotten VERY used to having lovely books delivered to me (or the occassional jaunt to the PO for a larger package) for basically free.  Tomorrow, I have to go to an actual bookstore to pick up and pay for a reference book that I need ASAP (can't even wait on Amazon for it).  I am feeling queasy and flustered about this...especially since PBS added that little "money saved" tracker.

I can beat that, I have to order a couple hundred dollars worth of textbooks tomorrow. I found one on here, and will be buying all used, but still! ;-) I feel your pain.

If no one bought the latest books, then we wouldn't be able to trade the latest books.

I know, you're only going to the book store for one certain book........ I'll bet it will be like the grocery store - go for one thing and come out with several bags of stuff.

I have bought several books brand new that weren't available here, just so I wouldn't have to wait, and have then posted them.  Read only once, by me!  Like Patricia said, someone has to break down and actually buy one once in awhile!  LOL  How else would those WL books get going?   :)     D.

I think that most of  us buy books every so often.  I do it more often than I should for our budget.  But I don't keep books that aren't reference books.  So every one I get and read goes into PBS.  Books have a limited lifespan so we do need to put new ones into the system sometimes.

Going into a bookstore for me is like an alcoholic going into a bar!  Yes, I can resist, but it will be painful.  Unless I have a really good coupon or the book(s) are on clearance, I usually try to jot down titles to look on PBS and Amazon later.  But sometimes I see something I just have to have at full price NOW.

I buy a fair amount of used books from Amazon sellers.  Yes, the postage is $3.99, but a lot of the time the book itself is just a buck or two (usually hardcovers).  I also buy at thrift stores.  I've gotten several recent WL hardcovers for 99 cents at one thrift store I frequent.  They don't specialize in books, so when one gets donated, they mark it low so it goes fast.

I've lucked out on textbooks recently, too.  I needed a couple more copies of a mathematics textbook I teach from.  I found one copy here, and another on Amazon for less than $6 including shipping.  Of course it helps that I use the 2002 edition rather than the 2009 version.  I don't think calculus has changed much in the last 7 years.

OK.  The bookstore didn't even have the book I wanted, despite it saying that it was in stock on the website!  Grr.

And, you guys are right, of course, about the need to buy books in order to increase PBS circulation.  And you're also right about my also having the inability to control myself in the bookstore around all of the other beautiful, shiny books.  I went prepared though -- no credit card, and just as much cash in hand as the book was going to cost ;)

I think I broke 2 teeth by clinching so hard after I read that.....

I feel your pain! We had to buy DS's college books as the booklist never came out until last week! It killed me having to pay so much for them. I'm still trying to get over the sticker shock. :(

Same here, my husband bought all new textbooks from Amazon and it came to $500 (its his first semester so he was being a textbook snob...lol, I think he saw the light after placing the order though)  I bought used, $310 ...ugh....not bad, but still.  I have my booklist for next semester and just one of my books is almost $300.

Looking at my TBR pile, I shouldn't have to buy any books for the next couple of years.  LOL   But...I probably will, anyway.  It is best to try to stay out of those fabulous stores.  But then there's the drug store, the grocery store, etc.  I'm trying to steer clear of those areas.     :)    D.

Well, I went shopping today. The book aisles and bookstores kept pulling me toward them! lol Even at Target, I ended up buying two books that I have seen here on people's WL. They look like very interesting books, so I just had to have them. Then of course, B&N was right across the street, and had to go there. I found quite a few books on the bargain table that were on my wishlist. Can't resist getting a hardcover version for only $4.98, ya know! Then I saw the latest books in series that I enjoy, so had to get those.

I really need to stay away from those bookstores and read the books I have in my TBR pile, which is huge by the way! lol
