I have not yet seen the book but it is reviewed in The Economist, p. 75, 28 November 2020. The essay lauds this as a detailed examination of the Asian troublemakers who already were tiring of colonialism and came to the Peace Conference in 1919. I knew Ho was there but not that the Surete was so much on his trail. The troublemakers from the Empire of India, Java, etc. were also being watched. They sometimes shared with each other by 'brush talk,' their various native languages often having roots in Chinese when written. The October Revolution was followed by Lenin's failed attempts to forment revolutions in Europe, after which he sought better opportunities in Asia. "'Underground Asia' breaks new ground by showing how a collective consciousness emerged among revolutionaries on this shifting terrain."
Also, I was surprised to learn that the short hair of our Flappers originated elsewhere. "...the bob-cut of the 'Modern Girl,' an attitude popularized in Shanghai and Tokyo before Paris or New York."
