Beautiful prose - like poetry. I felt for the painter in this book, although I didn't understand him or his actions at all times. It was interesting to read of the parallels between "underpainting" one's artwork at the same time one "underpaints" one's life. And if you examine it closely enough, the reasons behind both are virtually indistinguishable.
