Appealing characters, cute turns-of-phrase. Well-done, but a teeny bit cloying...as in, don't read the series one after the other. Try something palate-refreshing in between.
All that said, still, a bon-bon is nice now and again.

This is an older book (1989) but a delightful start to a series. I look forward to reading the further books about life in Manhattan.

This is a pleasant story for those who like mystery and New York City. While it's not difficult to come to the correct conclusion in this "who-dun-it", it is a fun read.

"Mrs. Gross and Mrs. Kahn were both elderly tenants on West End Avenue. Both lived--and suddenly died--in buildings undergoing million-dollar co-op conversions. And--most sinister of all--neither of them had cockroaches.

Housing Court attorney Nina Fischman's life is unravelling. Her job is running her ragged, and she can't decide whether to leave her nice WASP boyfriend--or marry him. But when two reasonably healthy old ladies die in very valuable apartments, Nina begins to supsect murder. Now all she has to do is convince Judah Lev, a short, younger, Orthodox prosecutor in the D. A.'s office, that something's not kosher...and figure out whey she's so attracted to him. In the meantime, Ida, Nina's sharp-witted mom, is on the case. After all, isn't detective just another word for yenta?"

From the back of the book: Mrs. Gross and Mrs. Kahn were both elderly tenants on West End Avenue. Both lived...and suddenly died...in buildings undergoing million-dollar co-op conversions. And..most sinister of all...neither of them had cockroaches...

A quick easy read.
