I have an unpostable copy of the hardcover of Peter F. Hamilton The Naked God.   It's unpostable because the cover is torn and mangeled.  The book is in great condition.  I think I can see that there are no copies in the system, but how do I go about letting someone know about my copy that they might want anyway, even with the paper cover torn?

Thanks for any help with this!

I think you are supposed to post it in the Book Bazaar, either with a deal or for free.  You could also put the description in your bookshelf header, and/or in your signature line.  The last option is the one I prefer, b/c that way with every post, it will get exposure in the forums.    :)      D.

If it is wishlisted, there is a thread for that in the Book Bazaar as well.  And you can ask for a credit and see if you have any takers.

Thanks! Appreciate the help.  I knew there was a place, just wasn't sure where..  LOVE PBS, and I think my 19 yo son loves it more.  He gets books on here that he can't get at the library!

Thanks again!

Juli

Juli, you say the "paper cover" is torn - are you saying that the Dust Jacket is torn or that the actual Hard Cover of the book is torn? If it is just the DJ, then the  book is postable, you don't even need to include a DJ at all and it only needs to be in postable condition if there is an RC that asks for the DJ to be included.

Just the dust cover is torn.  Cool! I thought hardcovers had to have an intact dust cover(with the picture etc) to be postable.  If it is postable I'm sure I will let the requester know that the dust cover is torn.

Thanks!

Juli

You don't even have to do that, but if it is nasty shape, you could let them know to see if they want you to include it or toss it. If someone wants a DJ in good condition they need to have  Requester Conditions to say that.

I strongly agree with Melanie.  Please don't start PM-ing people for things that are postable under the PBS guidelines and conditions.  It sets up an expectation that this will always happen  -  and it won't.  This willcause trouble for someone down the line.  The system is set up to work automatically and it's best left to do so for everyone involved.  DJ's are not part of the PBS conditions.  Any requestor who wants them really needs to have RC's in place for that.

I had a similar situation just yesterday...  The book was great, but the DJ was torn.  They told me to send it anyway, so I did, slightly torn DJ and all.  I'm sure the requestor will accept it just fine.   I don't know how to make a link, but all the feedback is in the thread called "Need Reply Fast"           :)    D.

from the help center:

Dust Jacket:

  • The DUST JACKET (this is not the same as the cover of a book) does not have to be included with a book at all, unless the requestor had this in their Requestor Conditions.
  • So DUST JACKET condition cannot be considered as part of the condition of a book, unless there were Requestor Conditions on the request specifying that the dust jacket be included.
  • If the Dust Jacket was to be included as specified in the Requestor Conditions on the request, the Dust Jacket must meet the same conditions as defined for the cover.

typically, if i post a hardcover that has a dust jacket, but it is not in PBS condition (tears/stained/etc), i will send a PM and ask if they would like the torn dust jacket or not.  you don't have to, and normally i don't PM requestors about their requests, but in this instance i do.  my thoughts are that some people would rather have a DJ than not, even if there is a tear/stain/etc, and i like to give them the option.
