The author was born in 1953, but the tale he tells is one of the world of India in the early 1900s, a place of poverty and struggle for his ancestors. The grimness of the reality is sometimes only tolerable because his family managed to break the cycle that bound them and escape their caste. Highly recommended for its descriptions of life and customs in India at the time.
