You don't find a lot of good horror writers anymore but when I found Brian Keene I can't put his books down, his writing is beyond just 'good', he grips you from the first page until you are so engrossed you don't realize you're almost finished.

Six friends on the way back from a concert take a wrong turn and end up in the 'wrong part' of town, a group of 'thugs' approach them and feeling threatened they take off running toward a house at the end of the street. As they enter the creepy house they soon discover they are not alone and have entered the house from hell!

Some pages of this story are so gross you have to have a strong stomach to get through those pages without putting it down but the story is so gripping you won't want to put it down.

An amazing, un-put-downable story about six teens who get stranded in the hood and end up in a situation that can only be described as "House of 1,000 Corpses" meets "The Hills Have Eyes" meets "Wrong Turn," set in a bad part of the city.

What made this book great was the descriptions, many of them gut-wrenchingly disgusting. In fact, I took off half a star from my rating because the images are never going to leave my mind and they are seriously messed up.

I'm glad Keene didn't pretend to write another zombie novel (who told him he could do that?) and stuck with his forte, which is suspenseful horror. If you need a quick read that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this is it.

Didn't care too much for the change-of-heart scenes, but I guess Keene had to get himself out of the painted corner somehow.

I admit I picked up this book solely based upon the moss covered house on the cover and the description of the story on the back. I figured this would be a good chance to read a new author. Wow! This story is right up there with any mutant-killer story such as The Hills Have Eyes. I don't recommend reading this while you are eating, either. The descriptions are great and utterly disgusting! A fantastic read if this is your type of thing. I recommend it!

When reading this book, I kept having flash's of the movie "Wrong Turn". Keene took a different direction with this book, as compared to everything else I've read from him. I one point I had to actually stop reading ( I was sitting in the dentist office, so my stomach was nervous already) cuz I was so grossed out. Thru out some of the book, I felt like I was rereading what I had read a few pages back. Overall, its Keene and I have to read him !

I thought this was a great book. One of the best horror books I read in a long time

The story begins with 6 best friends. 3 paired off couples. As with most[any] Brian Keene novel the action waits only for you to turn the page. To say who dies first and who survives would give away a GREAT horror story, so I'll just say that the flesh munchers had crude weapons but imaginative deathes/tortures for their victims. An honorable Ob mention, hats off.

The creature/horror/monster in Urban Gothic are described at best as mutants, at worst as homacidal limb ripping pus infected genitals and sores. If I for one moment thought 'Ah God they have gone and put torture porn to page.' I would have sadly have to leave my first ever Brian Keene novel unfinished. But...just as he can bob and weave through 6 main protaganist characters and dozens psyche and then ruthlessly chop them down to size. The antagnosist are able to taunt their victims verbally, phsyically and mentally throughout a house outfitted to maim.

Some parts of the story were abit fanstatic because it was a house in an urban setting but if I just switched over to that 'suspending belief' mode, I was OK. I won't get to fancy with my thoughts on this book. I love the author. He provided me an evening
of leisure horror and again another keeper added to the growing Keene collection.

If you are a horror fan this is not to be missed.
Not alot of new great horror.
The house is said to hold great riches. Located in
an Urban neighborhood and the residents have seen people go in but never come out.
The house holds some things but it is not riches. They have expanded the basement
to accommodate its guests..

I have read MANY scary books. This one went beyond that. It was very disturbing and even now after reading it I still think about it. If you like truly scary books this is the one for you. I promise you will not be disappointed. As usual Brian Keene has done it again.

I have to admit that this book was a disappointment. Kind of a cross between 'Ghoul' and 'Castaways', with very little character development or plot. Oh well... at least I didn't pay for it!

All I can say about this book is: HOLY SH*T. I mean, I love good horror, I do. And I've never gotten squeamish while READING, but this story left me gasping for breath at times! And, while I love to read before going to bed, after two nights of freakishly vivid and horrifying nightmares, I had to find an alternative story to put me into dreamland. If you scare easily, and still want to attempt to read this story, then I suggest you read it in broad daylight. Otherwise, happy reading, and sweet dreams!

This book was ridiculous. Very unsatisfying. Kills off most of the characters. Just really pointless and gory for a very weak payoff.

Sorry Brian Keene, try harder. I didn't even bother reading the preview of the next book.
