User-Oriented Design Analysis of the Vesub Technology Demonstration System
UserOriented Design Analysis of the Vesub Technology Demonstration System Author:Robert T. Hays, Scott K. Bradley, Altou G. Seamon This is a NAVAL AIR WARFARE CENTER TRAINING SYSTEMS DIV ORLANDO FL report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A075233. Students from a graduate level Human Computer Interaction Usability Evaluation and Design class at the University of Central Florida conducted user oriented design analyses of the VESUB Instructor/Operator Station (IOS) using standard usability heuristics. The analyses revealed numerous design violations which could reduce the effectiveness of operational versions of VESUB. The VESUB research team conducted a post-hoc analysis of their results, focusing on the most critical design violations which must be corrected to improve the usability of the operational VESUB IOS. A discussion of these design violations and recommendations for improved VESUB 105 design are provided. Finally, five general areas for future research to improve 105 designs are discussed: (1) standardization of graphical user interfaces; (2) development of on-line help for the instructor; (3) development of embedded instructor training; (4) application of task analysis methods to instructor tasks; and (5) use of voice recognition at the instructor station.« less
