I ordered a book last week. I'm in California and it's coming from New Jersey. I haven't recieved the book yet, which would be fine but I'm leaving on vacation for three weeks tomorrow. Kind of a dumb moment for me. We're having our mail stopped instead of having someone pick it up, so I can't just have someone text me when the book comes. If the book doesn't come today or tomorrow what should I do? I'm one day short of the "date of system action" thing.

Any ideas on what I should do? My books have a tendency to get lost in the mail, otherwise I would just trust that it arrived and mark it as so.

(Next vacation I'm not gonna order any closer than two weeks before!)

Thanks, Samantha

I have faced this situation several times since joining.  I always ALWAYS mark the books received when I leave on vacation.   Yes, it might go lost and yes it might be RWAP, but I feel a responsibility to the sender.  There is no way I am going to make the sender wait because I didn't allow enough time between ordering and going to vacation.

Thank you, Cozette. That's kind of what I figured I would do. If it doesn't come, lesson learned!

Did they use PBS postage?  If so, then they have already received their credit for the book and you could mark it received when you return, in the transaction archive.  If they didn't, I would probably mark it received before you go so they don't have to wait for their credit.  Or at least PM them and get their opinion.

If they didn't use the PBS postage or DC then I would also mark it received and then just hope it comes and take it as a lessoned learned.  I wouldn't order any books for a month before a long vacation like that since media mail can take that long.

I'm a little confused--you said you ordered the book last week....haven't gotten it...but it's only a couple of days before the 'system action date."  How can that be if you just ordered it last week? Usually it's 26 days from the time the person marks it mailed until the system action date which would declare it lost. Seems way too soon for that to be happening.

Now, if  you ordered it 3 weeks ago and it still hasn't gotten there, I would probably just wait til  you get back, because there's every chance it might be *really* lost. But if you just ordered last week, then I would mark it received and eat the loss of credit if it never does show up.

I agree with Cherl.

Why not PM the sender and let them know you'll be going away.

Ask if there was tracking and if so, check where it is currently.

Cheryl, sorry for the confusion. The cut off date is the 16th of August (off the top of my head) and I'll be back the 24th of August (as of the first post, I thought it was the 17th). I'm just going to mark it as received. Oh well.

I personally don't mark mine received, I usually PM the sender and let them know I will be unavailable to verify the book arrived and I'll mark it received upon my return...and then I thank them for their patience.
