Much better than Mark of the Vampire Queen which left me wondering if I could read more of this series.

Vampire's Claim takes place in the 1950's in Australia recounting how Devlin and Lady Daniela met (side characters in Mark of the Vampire Queen). Dev is a basically a drifter who has suffered some terrible losses and trauma in his life. Danny is a 200 year old vampire who has never taken a human servant.

Like the previous two books, this story balances the power in the relationship toward the female character, partially because she's the vampire and ultimately stronger, but also because I think that just how Joey Hill rolls. There is a lot of explicit sex that is broken up by bits of storyline and descriptions of the Australian outback.

In a way nothing new here until we get to know Devlin's story more, then see that he's really suffering Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The parts about how he deals with his mental issues, how their relationship helps him, is actually interesting to read. I found this book to have a lot more depth than the previous book.

That said, Hill is a long-winded writer and there are only so many ways to tell a vampire sex scene.
