This is a the second book in the "Nameless Detective" series. The action takes place post-World War II, probably in the 1950s. I got into this series as the author is co-author of the Carpenter and Quincannon 19th century, San Francisco private detective series which I enjoyed so much.
In this book the detective is hired by a women to look for her missing fiance, just out of the army and back from Germany. While doing so the detective also finds love. Unfortunately, the startling conclusion will cause complications with the woman he loves. And the heart ache doesn't here there.
