"When widower David Holt retires from his New York advertising firm, he fears his life might become rather dull. But memories of his past are awakened by the news that his son Simon, a journalist now living in London, has been commissioned to write an article on Caleb Carne, whose stirring broadcasts during World War II touched the heart of Britain.

As a young GI during the war, David was stationed in Carne's Cornish village and fell in love with the whole Carne family: hospitable, larger-than-life Caleb, his silent, intense wife, and their three daughters - sensible Caro, young and enthusiastic Pen, and flirtatious Trish. The Carnes left an everlasting impression on David, as did the events of his final bewildering, horrifying night in Cornwall.

Carne is now celebrating his ninety-fifth birthday and the village is throwing a party for its favorite son. When Simon attends the party, he comes across all of the people whose secrets he has discovered while doing research for his article: the three Carne daughters; Laura, the granddaughter of Carne's wartime mistress who has come to seek justice; and David himself, who yearns to know the truth about that last stormy night on the Cornwall cliffs."

Turned out I have read this book before and I remembered that I liked it very much.
