Engineers are also aware of the wider needs of society and the Engineering Council has been coordinating the study offour major issues of mounting public concern. Institution working groups in consultation with other bodies have been developing a view of the United Kingdom's future needs for energy, the environment, telecommunications and transport. Their findings, looking toward the year 2000, combine to provide an engineer's perception of the challenges and the solutions. This product of the 2020 vision programme is timely arriving as it does in the first year of a new government. The Engineering Council's contribution to the debate on behalf of its 300,000 registered engineers is thoughtful and upbeat, as befits a profession which characteristically solves problems and creates national wealth.« less
