Hello fellow writers,

Does anyone have sites or suggestions on where to find opportunities to contribute writing? I've been trying for ages to find sites that interest me, whether it's about writing, books, etc, that welcome people to submit writings. I want to say what type, but I honestly don't know myself. I've looked at some sites that have people reviewing books and other things, but no one seems to want volunteers.

Mainly I'm trying to build up my writing portfolio. I'm working on getting into a creative writing graduate program and I'd like to have more samples to show my skills. I'm not looking to get paid. Just to have an opportunity to contribute would be enough.

Well, if there are any sites to suggest, I would welcome them!

Natalie,

Have you considered contacting local non-profits in your area and asking them if they'd be interested in someone to write press releases for them?  I volunteer at a local non-profit cable community access television station that doesn't have the budget for a staff person to do this.  (I volunteer as a crew member and producer, not a writer.)  The historical village I occasionally volunteer at also has a hard time keeping up with chances to let the community know about neat events through press releases.  Also check out kids' clubs and scout troops.  I'm always surprised to find out how many groups would like the community to know more about them, but haven't thought of sending local papers press releases.
