Lord Ashurst (William), long stationed in India, must take the Rajah's oldest son to England, out of danger from palace intrigues. He has inherited English estates but there's no cash, so when Miss Rosa Ingram proposes a marriage of convenience, he accepts - and then when wealth unexpectedly comes his way, he cries off. Rosa is hurt, the child (Dhanu) that William rescued is pursued and endangered, and a rival for William's affections appears, but along the way Rosa and William have fallen for each other. Will pride and hurt feelings get in the way?
I had mixed feelings about this book. I read on to see how the various problems would be resolved, but it was difficult for me because the writing style seemed cliched and stodgy and there were one or two points when some action I would expect the characters to have taken was completely ignored. I would rate this one an okay time passer but pretty standard stuff overall.
This book is apparently not part of any series.
