Note: I think this is a paperback book club edition -- the ISBN on the back cover doesn't match anything, and the ISBN inside is for a hardcover. — Capturing a crucial moment in the history of exploration, the mid-nineteenth-century romance with the Arctic, Andrea Barrett focuses on a particular expedition and its accompanying scholar-naturalist...  more »

This is fiction but it seems so real. You feel the ice and the human hardship. Visceral. Loved it.

Absolutely one of the best reads i have enjoyed in awhile of this genre. Thrilling. Part fiction, part truth. Trapped in ice in the cold winter the Narwhal holds a ship full of heros but unfortunately no one will ever know who they all were. This was a very moving read. If you are interested or would like to know about the voyage of the Narwhal this is a great book to read.

This was pretty good - a little slow in parts, but overall interesting. It felt like a sequel to _The Terror_ about a mission looking into John Franklin's disappearance. It was well researched and the character of Zeke was especially easy to hate - he made a good villain in that there wasn't anything redeeming about him.

Historical Fiction about the mid nineteenth century Artic explorations. Well written and good for book discussion. We did a companion read with the short story from Ship Fever. There's a cross over character.
