Has anyone read any of the baseball stories of W. P. Kinsella? He wrote "Shoeless Joe" which was the basis for the film "Field of Dreams." I just finished "The Iowa Baseball Confederacy" and it was a great read. Although it was totally fictional, it has lots of baseball history, plus elements of mysticism and lots of humor too. I'd be glad to discuss his other books too. Have read some of his other novels and short story collections. Ken |

I have only read Magic Time and just thought it to be okay. The whole mysticism was just not believable for me. I have The Dixon Cornbelt league on my shelf but haven't gotten to it yet. I was not a big fan of Field of Dreams for same reasons so haven't read Shoeless Joe. As far as a recent baseball book that I really enjoyed, Odd Man Out by Matt McCarthy is basically a journal of the season he spent in the minors. I thought it was very funny and really gave you a taste of what the lower minor leagues was like--also mentions several players now in the majors that he played with and against. |
