The other day (five days ago in fact) I requested a book with one copy available in the system.  The request timed out and it bounced to my WL, where I was now #2 of 2 on the wish list.  It's no big deal, but seems a little odd to me.  If it was a WL request that timed out would I go back to #1, or would that get bumped further back as well?

The other member may have been wishing for the book but had their shelf on Vacation Hold since before the book was posted. Then took their account off of Hold while your transaction was in progress.

Or the other wisher had already been offered the same book, but the poster declined that order due to RCs. The book would then have been posted to their shelf. When you requested it from their shelf, they didnt log in to accept your order.

Or they could have put the book on WL while your's was pending. Since you never technically had it on your WL they put you at #2.

I'm on my 3rd request for a WL book.  Actually there were 2 posted into the system originally.  First I had a BOB deal fall through-they had 2 offers for the same book and chose the other.  So I ordered the remaining posted book.  Person accepted but then never marked it mailed.  They put it on my WL.  The 3rd person let it sit until it almost timed out.  So now it's accepted but we'll see if this one actually arrives.

That's one thing about the system...it's all about the timing.  FIFO works - it works best if you have good timing.!

There are all sorts of scenarios where you would have gone to #2 on the WL instead of #1. Some have been mentioned. Another possibility is that long before you ever ordered the book, there were a couple of copies in the system and someone else ordered one--and while you were waiting for your copy to get accepted, that person's book went lost in the mail, so they were put on the WL for it since the remaining copy (yours) had been ordered. Thus when yours timed out, you'd be at #2.

Or someone else might have simply put the book on their WL while you were waiting for acceptance. Unless you kept constant tabs on the book during the five days you were waiting for the acceptance, there's no way to know when the person ahead of you was put on the wishlist. It might have been 10 minutes after you ordered the last book in the system, it might have been 10 minutes before your request timed out, but one way or another, someone else got there first.

As ruthy said, it's all about timing!
