But as a complete translation could result only in a bulky and somewhat expensive publica tion, and as, in my judgment, there were many portions which could be omitted with out lessening its interest for English readers, it appeared feasible to take the most inti mate and striking passages as a basis for a smaller volume. This I have done and I trust that, with the introduction and the connecting narrative which I have supplied, the story of Wagner and his Isolde has been told without any serious omissions.
