Who has not dreamed of how this Earth of ours could have been had the little incidents of history worked out otherwise?
Suppose that a few of our present inventions had been made earlier, in the 19th century instead of the 20th? Suppose some things had never been discovered at all? Suppose that politics had followed different courses? These things were all possible--are there then Earths where they did work out differently?
This is the story of Oswald Bastable, a Victorian captain who found himself in such alternate worlds. It is based on notes handed down to Moorcock by his grandfather and which the talented writer has put into the form of an exciting novel. It is a convincing story of a world of mighty airship empires--and a Chinese genius who invented the means of overthrowing the West's power.
