This book takes place in the Warsaw Ghetto during WWII.
-
Each chapter is told in first-person and alternates between two teenagers - Roman and Emilia.
-
Roman fights in the resistance and becomes integral in the Warsaw Uprising, and Emilia does all she can to help rescue children out of the Warsaw Ghetto. Through the years, their lives intertwine as they individually experience horrific situations that develop them into resilient adults.
-
This is a well-told story that keeps your attention, pulls at your heartstrings, and teaches you about historical abominations that should never be forgotten.

Iterating, challenging read

The most profound impact of The Warsaw Orphan for me is the age of the main characters. They are young - children. Yet, they sound and behave as adults for that is the reality of their lives. Time and time again throughout this book, the events and then the reminder of their ages makes the emotion and the horror that much greater.
