Yeats (1865-1939), has been released. Webber is well known on the North Shore of Massachusetts as a prolific director of theater, a cherished teacher and a gifted oral interpreter of poetry and prose. She is also the founder and artistic director of Theatre in the Pines in Rockport, MA. The poetry selected for this recording is representative of Yeats' early work and ranges in style from haunting to whimsical to profound. Among the selections is The Stolen Child, The Fiddler of Dooney and The Easter Rebellion. Entitled To the Waters and the Wild, this recording includes music to enhance the listening experience. Not that Webber's voice needs enhancing, for it is exceptional - rich in timbre and expressive in a way that honors the poetry and embraces the listener. According to Mary Black, one of Webber's former Gloucester High School drama students and an actor in recent Theatre in the Pines productions, Nan Webber has an amazing command of the English language... While listening to her speak, you can be transported to many places and experience the full gamut of emotion. The CD also features traditional Irish tunes as well as original music, quietly accompanying the voice at times or lingering after poems end. Most of the arrangements, created specifically for this project by Middleton composer Peter Vantine, are built around authentic samples of Celtic instruments. Vantine, an accomplished pianist, also performs on several tracks. His instrumental interpretations of familiar tunes such as The Easter Rebellion and Down by the Salley Gardens are contemporary, yet remain true to the genre.
