Watson's appeal for his wife's murder was insanity, and the author brings it to life well. Too well - I found the book depressing, confusing, and in places boring. Most of the book lays out the author's fictional re-creation of the lives of actual people, covering thirty years leading up to the murder. The last portion of the book contains court transcrips, letters, and the like, with another bit of imagination at the end.
