Ok, I've looked but I don't see a way to tag a "friend" with a reminder. I have someone who is interested in the same author as I am who has recently ordered three books from me by that author. I have several other books by this author on order and would like to offer them to her directly when I'm done with them. But, to do that I have to remember who wants that author's books. So, is there some clever way to tag or put a notation on a "friend" so I will know who to contact when I'm done with those particular books?

Once you have her on your Friends list you can use the Tag function there. Here's the Help Center section on applying Friend Tags: How to Use the Friends List...Using tags:

Well, that's pretty cool. I'm not sure how I missed it, though. |

Kate, you could also put a Private Note on the book(s) with your friend's name... |

You could also make yourself your own buddy and then PM yourself. |

What they said! I frequently use Mary's method...friend yourself, then pm yourself. You can even archive your message and keep it around a long time. |
