Another cute chick lit novel from Crusie... Two sisters who operate a small wedding video business join a has-been actress to make a film in the actress' home town. Naturally, they almost immediately meet handsome available men, and romance (and explicit sex) promptly ensues. Throw in a mother who is protective of her 30-something, womanizing son, a Porn King who may sponsor the film if they spice it up a little, a councilman's daughter who can't wait to get out of town, and, oops, a dead body, and you know you're off for a fun ride.

This is the 2nd book I've read by Crusie and though not my usual genre, I think I liked it better than Fast Women. It started off slow and the first chapter had a hard time holding my interest. I had just finished a cozy mystery, Owls Well Ends Well by Donna Andrews, and the slower pace of Temptation kept putting me to sleep. I almost thought I'd have to put it down before finishing the first chapter. Since I was traveling at the time, and at the 2006 BookCrossing Convention, I had my share of other books to choose from instead of starting this one. Fortunately, I kept at it though, and the pace picked up as additional characters were introduced.

All Sophie Dempsey wants is to live a quiet life videotaping weddings for her video company. After all, she and sister Amy come from less than respectable roots. But when a video assignment brings them to Temptation, Ohio, things take a funny turn. Jennifer Crusie will keep you laughing, guessing and turning the pages of this sexy, delightful novel.

I haven't listened to this yet, but it's a Bookcassette edition, which means it can only be played on a machine with balance control. You listen to the first tape with the balance all the way over to the left channel, then listen to tape one again but this time with the balance turned all the way to the right. Then you do the same with the next tape, etc.

Prepare to be absolutely charmed by Jennifer Crusie's riotous tale of two slightly twisted sisters and a town chock full of hunks, coots, and petty politics in Welcome to Temptation.
Sophie and Amy Dempsey are just two wedding filmers trying to hop to the next level of their careers when they agree to produce a documentary of aging film star Clea Whipple's return to her hometown of Temptation, Ohio. And when the local mayor, Phin Tucker, and the police chief, Wes Mazur, proffer themselves as willing subjects for quick flings, Sophie and Amy aren't the type to object. But things are never easy in rural Ohio, and what starts off as an esoteric art film project soon evolves into potential porn--and that's just the relationships, let alone the documentary. Clea's husband Zane turns belly-up, the race for mayor turns dirty, and Sophie and Phin turn on the heat full steam.

With hot sex, clever characters, and Crusie's trademark wit, Welcome to Temptation will keep your eyes glued to the page and your stomach aching with laughter.

My little sister got me to listen to this one after my failed attempts at actually just reading the book. I couldn't get into it. There were funny parts, but the story felt choppy and the characters were dull and kind of annoying. There were also too many characters for me to follow what was going on the whole time. It was ok, but I'm glad it's over.

Wow! What a fun book! I had a few moments in the first few 75 pages or so that I found to be a little too bizarre (some of the residents of Temptation belong in Stepford!), but it picked up after that and was very enjoyable. I am one of those people who MUST read books in order, if you are too, follow this one up with Faking It to find out what happens with Davy.

From Publishers Weekly:
Crusie's saucy feminist romp stars a heroine who captures her man's heart, and then goes after his job, meanwhile enjoying "headbanging sex," filming soft porn and acquiring both a house and a dog named Lassie. A car crash welcomes Sophia Dempsey to Temptation, Ohio, as she arrives from Cincinnati to help her hot-tempered, smart-mouthed sister, Amy, film a video with a washed-up local actress. Sophie's misgivings about small-town Temptation increase when she sees the town's rusted welcome sign: "We Believe in Family Values." Yet unconventional Sophie soon ditches her boyfriend (who is also her ex-therapist) and falls for Phineas Tucker, Temptation's macho mayor, scion of the town's premier political family and single father. News of the Dempsey sisters' film prompts the prudish town council to institute an antiporn ordinance, which Phin is obligated to uphold while he inspires Sophie's experiments with sexy camerawork. Crusie adroitly mixes the outrageous and the practical, modern feminism and old-fashioned romance, and adds a liberal dose of razor-sharp humor. Sophie's effort to enact the mayor's favorite sexual fantasy is thwarted by interruptions by various townspeople confessing to murder, while, in one hilarious highlight, Sophie's costume for the evening falls victim to the laws of gravity. Minor characters offer more humor and romance: the police chief and the ex-juvenile delinquent, Sophie's scheming brother and his ex-wife, the porn king and the town debutante, Phin's daughter and his mother. Like a stand-up comic, Crusie (Crazy for You) charms with her brisk, edgy style, and the repartee between Sophie and Phin keeps energy and sexual tension high. A romantic comedy that adds luster to the genre, this effervescent tale will please readers who can relate to Sophie's undaunted exploration of all her desires.

This book was a real struggle for me to finish. If I hadn't been having it read to me via audibook, I don't honestly think I would've stuck it out. Until now I've enjoyed all of the Crusie books I've read but this one just didn't resonate with me. It's about a pair of sisters who visit the town of Temptation to shoot a documovie on a fading movie star (at least that's what I got out of it). They've always been outsiders and were raised by a con man so and though they're harmless enough they rather thrive on being a little 'bad'. Naturally, one of the sister's falls for the upright major. They have lots of supposed fantasy sex (that was a bit boring, if you ask me) and the major gets into hot water because the town is afraid the movie the sisters are making is going to be nothing but porn. Someone dies, a water tower gets painted several times, the aging starlet has sex with the son of her former lover, a young girl falls in love a porn producer (I found this storyline gross) and other assorted things happen that I found unbelievable. This book didn't have the wit and spark of the earlier books I've read by this author and in the end there were so many characters that I had a very difficult time remember who was who and wouldn't bother rereading it to figure it out.
