In a departure from his popular technothrillers, Cobb takes us back to the 1950s for a detective novel set along the length of Route 66 from Chicago to L.A. All the hallmarks of good detective fiction are present: hard boiled protagonist, lovely damsel in distress, and evil gangster in pursuit. Well-written and fun to read. Recommended.
Love this book and the trip down Route 66! Read this as part of a discussion series about Route 66. Mr. Cobb clarifies and paints wonderful imagines of the places along 66 that we discussed/read about in the non-fiction travel guides. The characters were personable and you have to hang on for the ride to discover the ending.
Mr. Cobb graciously participated in a teleconference during our group discussion. He willingly answered all our questions, provided some wonderful "research" info. about writing West on 66. Now I'll be looking for more James H. Cobb books!

A terrific story and the wonderful feeling of traveling "the mother road" in the later 50's. Having traveled that road from the East coast to Los Angeles myself in 1960 (although I was 12) I still recognized many names of towns and motor courts in the book. Brought back great memories and wondering if there are still Burma Shave ads painted on red barns along the way.
