The siege of Kha Sanh took place almost two years before I entered Marine Corps Office Candidate School, but I had followed it closely in the news. Although I was still in college at the time, I knew I was heading into the Corps after graduation. So you might say I had a personal interest in what the Marines did there.
The Battle for the Hills and the Siege of Khe Sanh are high points in USMC history. Every Marine knows of them. This memoir is impressive, not only because of what the author experienced, but also because he was a private first class. He has no hidden agenda, and he wsn't looking for a movie contract. He is simply relating what the average Marine on the ground experienced, and he does it extremely well. Some of the things he and his buddies did sound as though he made them up, but fellow Marines, of any period, will know he didn't. As such, I highly recommend this memoir to every active duty and former Marine.
The closest I got to Khe Sanh was Quang Tri, spending most of my tour in and around the Da Nang area. But the Kha Sanh base, as the author describes it, brought back so many memorires.
