This great gardening book includes the following:

- Comprehensive Western plant encyclopedia (includes the family name of every plant as knowing this can help you to anticipate what to expect from it);

- Zoned for 24 climates (tells you in which Western climates any listed plant will grow and identifies each plant's degree of drought tolerance);

- Plant selection guide;

- Landscaping ideas in color (book includes scores of beautiful color photographs to show what specific Western garden plants look like as they mature and flower); and

- How to control pests, diseases & weeds.

The Foreward says that over a lengthy lifetme, this book has become an indispensable part of gardening in the West, a region that extends from teh Pacific Ocean to the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains.

If you can't afford a newer edition, by all means, grab this. Much of the year I keep this book by my bed, and look at it as much now as I did when I was getting started. It's not the only book you'll ever need but it's absolutely a key book for beginners and experts alike.
