There have been a lot of posts recently about the cheaper paper that is used for a lot of paperbacks recently, it seems to get wavy sometimes before the books even leave the store.

I think most people can tell the difference ... usually if all the pages are slightly wavy, and there is no staining, that is cheap paper, and if the book is only wavy in part, or the pages that are wavy are also a little stiffer, or there is a water stain where you can tell the book got wet, that is water damage.

I would probably post it, unless the waviness is really bad.

Thanks  to both of you..I read the thread link and no it is not humidity I live in a cold state..well today its warm lol...it is in NO way any liquid spill....I feel its the paper..I even hate the ultra light feel of the paper...this is like one of those bigger paperbacks and I told my hubby last night I fear tearing a page turning it....So as I KNOW it is not water /liquid damage or anything ....and its a new book and all.......should I post it when I am done?  I KNOW it is a brand new clean book but will the person who gets it know that ??? Thanks again and ahead

BTW I am half tempted to read it and return it  to BN as I still have the receipt (and  2 weeks to return it )

I had a new book a couple weeks ago where the paper was so thin, you could amost read the text from the other side of the paper.  It was SO annoying!

Sandy,

I would post it.     We all have some experience with putting a sweating cup on paper and see what it does - ripple, crunch, wave.  It doesn't sound like that at all.  Your book is new so I would feel good about it.

Sometimes I wonder if we forum readers obsess more about our pages than the majority on PBS.  :)  We want to be good swappers.

I have one hardcover book that I received through PBS that has a bit of a wave on one page.  Its not crunchy, crusty from dried up liquid but, maybe from where the book was held for awhile.  It may just be some smushing.  The color of the page is unchanged.  Nothing really to speak of .  I wouldn't even notice it if I wasn't thinking about this site and the term "water damage".    In fact, when I got this book, I was really happy about its condition.  It looks like it may have been read by one or two people even though it was published in 2004.  Not a single tear on the dust jacket.   I feel like a nut analyzing a quarter size wave in  a book that some awesome PBSer sent me.

Recently I bought a new MMP with the wavy pages like the OP described, I solved the problem by putting a large heavy book on top of the MMP and leaving it for about a week, no more wavy pages. It has now been about 10 weeks since the "treatment" and the pages are still fine, might not work everytime but it's worth a try.

I did the same thing as Kathleen; I put the book in between several large (heavy) books, and left it for same amount of time; worked for me too!Reminded me of when I pressed flowers many years ago.....

I weighted a wavy book under several heavy books for a week or so.   Presto, no more waves!  And the cure lasted.

Sometimes the binding process causes the waves as well.

Lol hey gang thanks....I think I may just be getting so paranoid due to all the RWAP  I have seen posted in here..Last night I looked at the book and ya know..the paper kind of reminds me of cheap color book paper....IF you REALLY really inspect it..I swear some of the pages are a teeny weenie bit longer.....not that normal people would see it but I did .....The papet sucks..I think I may write in Kyra Davis' blog that she needs to get them to use better paper I did not have any issues with all her other books......but yeah I think I worry much now...

PBS guidelines require that books not have water damage.  Although wavy pages are one symptom of water damage, there are other legitimate causes of wavy paper.   By themselves, I don't believe pages with a slight wave render a book unpostable?  If you purchased the book new, and know it hasn't been wet, I wouldn't hesitate to post to PBS.
